How to Grow

Here I am giving few growing tips based on my experience. The growing method varies based on climate especially watering and Potting media. Most of the other cultural practices will remain same.

When the temperature is cold you need to check how to Manage May be google might help you. As we are not experiencing cold in our region.

Dendrobium growing Under Tropical Humid Condition Like Kerala where the humidity is over 60-80 % with more rain fall.

Shade Net % Black 50% for Blooming size plant and Smaller plants prefer more shade.
Watering Drench the plant with water in the morning. Hose watering is ideal. Evening watering is not required. If the climate is cloudy you can skip the watering.
Humidity Most of the orchids love humidity over 60%
Potting Media Broken pot pieces and charcoal. While planting the basal portion of the plant should be exposed to outside. Or else the new shoot emerging from base potion will face difficulty to come out.
Fertilizer

Organic Fertilizer:

a. Use Panchakavya @ 20 ml per liter of water at a gap of 30 days.

b. Or Take 20 grams Fresh cow dung+ 3 grams Neem cake mix together and add 100 ml of water. Keep the solution for 3 days . Dilute to 20 times. Sieve with cloth and remove all the inert matter and spray the clear solution to the plant also apply in the potting media.

c. Also you can use Tender coconut water dilute to 20 times and spray on the leaves

d. Avoid using Organic fertilizer during rainy periods

Chemical Fertilzer:

a. 20:20:20 @ 2 gram per liter of water at a gap of 10 days

To Induce flower spray Green Care 13:27:27 or 0:52:34 Or 10:30:20 @ 2 grams per litter of water for continuous two weeks at a gap of 7 days and the switch over to the balance (20:20:20) fertilizer. So whenever you feel the flowering is low then use this flower booster chemical. During this time do not use organic fertilizer.

Dendrobium growing Under Dry Condition where the Humdity is low with less rain fall and more sun shine hours.

Shade Net % Black 70% for Blooming size plant and Smaller plants prefer more shade.
Watering Drench the plant with water in the morning and if too dry also in the evening. Make sure the planting media should not be wet in the night time. Which leads to rotting of roots.. Hose watering is ideal.
Humidity Most of the orchids love humidity over 60%. Use misters to increase the humidity Do not apply mist when the climate is very hot and sun light is high
Potting Media Use more of Coconut husk and few pieces of Charcoal and Broken pot pieces. Or Equal proportion of these three medias. While planting the basal portion of the plant should be exposed to outside. Or else the new shoot emerging from base potion will face difficulty to come out.

Phalenopsis Cultural Requirement

Shade Net % 75 % Black
Temperature Requirement 18-30 and can grow up to 35 degree Centigrade. Bud initiation is controlled by temperature. If the night temperature is between 18-22 degree for a week the plant will initiate buds. In Kerala, we get buds mostly in Monsoon and Cool period of the months. Though the temperature is not too low but initiation is very good Yearly twice to thrice. Climate like Bangalore and cooler part of the area are ideal for Phalaenopsis growing. Most of the variety the flower last for 3-4 months. So yearly twice flowering means Almost 8 months of the year you can enjoy the flower.
Watering Drench only the potting media Do not wet the leaf. Even if you wet the plant make sure the water do not stagnate on the crown / top of the plant. Keep the plant with 30degree angle to drain the water specially during rainy days
Humidity Over 60 %
Potting Media

Mix sphagnum moss with Charcoal and Broken pot pieces in equal proportion.

Fertilizer Weekly once with 19:19:19 or 20:20:20 @ 2 grams per litter of water. Do not give organic fertilizer much as the leaves are soft may get fungal infection fast.

Control Insect and Diseases.

a. Spray Indofil M- 45( Mangozeb) @ 2 Grams per liter of water every 10 days.

b. If yellowing of leaf or find some infection spray Bavistin( Carbendazim) @ 1 gram per liter of water.

c. If you find rotting symptom, cut that portion and apply Indofil as a paste in the cut portion.

d. Maintain a gap between two chemical spray minimum 2-3 days.

Chemical Fertilzer:

a. Remove all the yellow and infected leaves.

b.Make sure that the potting media is dry in the night time. Morning watering is good for the plant.

c. Spray all the fertilizer, chemicals to the bottom of the leaves. Do not spray chemicals when the condition is hot and dry. Spray chemicals after watering. Its safer for the plants.

d. To control insect use Confidar @ 0.5 ml per liter of water at a gap of 15 days. Its always better to rotate the chemical every month like Rogar etc.
